Hakodate weather and squid rice filled my stomach to the brim
February 3, 2021
Squid rice is often seen in Hakodate station bento boxes and at Hokkaido product exhibitions, but it's easy to prepare.
What?...Cut the tentacles, stuff them into the body along with glutinous rice, and seal the opening with a toothpick.
All you have to do is put the squid rice base into a pot with soy sauce and various seasonings, cover with foil and simmer. That's it. It's easier than nikujaga (beef and potato stew). It takes less than 30 minutes.
"Today is a perfect day for Hakodate!"
And then, right under the equator, we had a moment of Hokkaido. The squid tentacles and rice stuffed inside a squid-like shape is sure to be a culture shock for even the little ones.
If you boil non-glutinous rice as is, it will fall apart and not harden, so it is preferable to use glutinous rice, which hardens tightly.
Soak the raw rice in water for 30 minutes to soften it, then stuff it into the squid's body so that it covers 70% of the inside, and boil it. When it's done, the squid will burst with glutinous rice!
Cut it into slices and gobble it down! The height of happiness, how delicious it looks!
Please give Inazo 's "Mochigome Kinunohada" a try. One bag is 300g and can be used up completely.
